Contemporary Dance, WokingContemporary dance was developed during the 20th century. It combines elements from Modern, Jazz, Lyrical and Classical Ballet. Strong ballet technique is essential when learning Contemporary technique. The ISTD launched their own Contemporary syllabus in April 2019, developed by dancer, Choreographer, and ex Rambert school Principal, Dr Ross McKim. Shani trained at the Rambert School under Dr McKim’s tuition for three years and has a very good understanding of how the movement should feel and be presented. The ISTD Contemporary syllabus teaches five themes, falls, walks, contractions, spirals and release, using floor work and travelling enchainment’s and a set Dance at Intermediate foundation level. This also has an improvisation section. The syllabus aims to focus on the basics. Currently the syllabus has three levels, Intermediate Foundation and Advanced 1 Students will be offered the ISTD Graded exam when Shani is sure they have reached the required standard. In the meantime we will learn unset Contemporary routines, work on the themes and elements needed, including improvisation and student choreography. |
